About the typeface

Didot NG is Newglyph’s modern interpretation of Didot — the neoclassical serif typefaces that emerged in late 18th- and early 19th-century France. That style comes from the printing and type design work of the Didot family during a period when advances in paper production, ink quality, and high-precision press technology made radically higher contrast letterforms possible. In contrast to the earlier “Old Style” serif traditions, which were rooted in Renaissance calligraphy and characterized by relatively low contrast, angled stress, and bracketed serifs, Didot represents a shift toward rationalized, geometric construction influenced by Enlightenment ideals of order and clarity. Its defining features include extreme contrast between thick vertical strokes and delicate hairlines, vertically stressed forms that emphasize elegance and rigidity, unbracketed hairline serifs that meet stems at sharp transitions, and refined terminals such as ball endings on select characters. Together, these traits produce a crisp, formal, and highly stylized appearance that later became strongly associated with luxury publishing, fashion editorial design, and modern branding systems, where visual sophistication and impact are a high priority.

Designed by Ian Party, Didot NG elevates the historical elegance to the standards of the contemporary design needs. Built as a variable font, it allows seamless weight and width transitions for animations or web interactions, as well as traditional typesetting at a range of scales from bodycopy to headlines in print, editorial, advertising, posters and more. The font family includes 180 styles, organized into 10 bundles—Didot NG and Didot NG BIG—each with 9 weights across Extra Condensed, Condensed, Normal, Expanded, and Ultra Expanded, including italics.
