About the typeface

Influenced by the atmosphere of contemporary art museums, FL Art Grotesk is a clean neo-grotesk gone extreme. Starting from the familiar Regular, the type family pushes its weights and widths beyond the norm, becoming almost ornamental in its most narrow, wide, thick and thin cuts.

In artistic spaces, everything feels different: light, objects, people, air, typography. Art Grotesk is my impressionist endeavor of capturing the elusive essence of the moment of navigating through a gallery, reading artwork captions, enjoying beautiful exhibition posters or browsing through a hip bookshop nearby, without the intent to actually buy anything.

The typeface is designed to be flexible and easy to use for anything from normal typesetting to fitting text in a limited space, from going dramatically wide for a captivating look to squeezing it all into a typographic pattern. The spectrum of weights also goes far: the common Bold, at which you’d expect it to stop, is just in the middle of its range going from Thin to Dense.

Art Grotesk’s vertical proportions adapt depending on the width. In normal and wide styles, the x-height is average, making it comfortable to read and pair with other fonts. As you squeeze the width however, aiming for headlines, posters and other big-size usage, the lowercase letters grow large and extenders shrink, allowing for a much tighter spacing.

The font family comes in 162 styles: 9 widths × 9 weights × 15° italics. It is packed with useful symbols, arrows and OpenType features such as case-sensitive forms, alternatives, fractions, superiors, tabular figures and slashed zero. Of course, all that is also available in the variable font format, which you can get with each sub-family or the full-family. Art Grotesk supports a lot of Latin-based languages.
